Mighty Moss

I took a few photos of Moss Landing tonight with the sunset.

The views from the top of those smoke stacks must be incredible.

Cars drive past Moss Landing Power Plant on California State Route One in Moss Landing , Calif. on Thursday June 3, 2010. The plant is California’s largest non-nuclear electricity producing facility.

I shot the Dia Del Nino event at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

This image of visitors walking into the aquarium from the great tide pool is one of my favorites.

This image is featured in a photo show in King City that includes some of my images taken at vineyards and wineries. The opening is this Friday April 16th, 2010 at 7PM.

That is about an hour south of Salinas on Highway 101. They have a new show each month and I have six huge prints in a show of photography and quilts from Monterey County artists.

In a past life I worked at two crushes at wineries where I did everything from picking grapes to sampling the fruits of the labor. The hours are long, the people are cool, the work has its rewards, and the scenery is (of course) beautiful.

Big Sur

I headed down the coast to one of my favorite parts of the world and once again I was stunned by the beauty.

I visited the good people at the Big Sur Bakery and Restaurant. I made a portrait of baker Michelle Wojtowicz and her husband chef Philip Wojtowicz with their son Henry, 1 year.

I shot a photo of the interior of the restaurant at Deetjens Big Sur Inn. A painting of Grandpa Deetjens hangs on the wall in the fire place room. For this photo I worked with my lights to create a sunset in the middle of day to give a feeling of warmth to the rustic room.

I dropped in on the Mangus Toren while he worked inside the Henry Miller Library. The books hanging from the ceiling are copies of Miller’s books that have been translated into other languages.

I stopped near the Rocky Creek Bridge and was lucky enough to catch a calf running to catch up with friends on the bluffs above the Pacific. What a magical place!

Cannery Row

I just spent some time photographing on Cannery Row in Monterey. And I have to say that amidst the tourist attractions are some interesting folks,
doing interesting things.

These first couple of photos are of Dick Crispo at his studio on Cannery Row. To the right is the Monterey Peninsula Art Foundation which Crispo helped form. He also painted murals inside prisons. He is an interesting guy!
I met with a few of the new and older folks who have set up shop on the street John Steinbeck made famous.

I shot photos of a dog chasing a stick at McAbee beach nestled between the hotels and restaurants. A homeless man once told me between sips on his 40-ouncer that the rubble of the old canneries at the other end of the beach was a good place to fight.

I also met up with Daren Warnick, owner of the Cannery Row Sardine Company who was nice enough to wheel his giant can of sardines out of his shop and onto the Row. He is selling sardines that are from the USA which is unique.

And finally I just walked around a bit at night and tried to envision the place covered in fresh sardines and with some of the grit that Steinbeck wrote about.

Steinbeck House

Here is a photo from an assignment covering the house where John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California. I was blessed with some great natural light in the “Blue Room”
